Experience South Moravia’s Pálava Hills at IWINETC

Feb 26, 2025 | Wine Tourism Conference

The Pálava Hills offer a breathtaking blend of stunning landscapes, world-class wines, and rich cultural heritage. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the region is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers, as well as a premier wine destination known for its unique terroir and exceptional grape varieties. The historic town of Mikulov, the gateway to the Pálava Hills, will host the International Wine Tourism Conference (IWINETC) on March 26-27, bringing together wine and tourism professionals from around the world.

A Unique Terroir for Outstanding Wines

The Pálava Hills are defined by their limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the distinctive minerality and complexity of the wines produced here. The warm, dry climate, influenced by the nearby Nové Mlýny reservoirs, ensures optimal ripening conditions for the grapes.

Among the standout varieties is Pálava, an aromatic cross between Gewürztraminer and Müller-Thurgau, known for its floral and spicy notes. Other prominent white varieties include Ryzlink vlašský (Welschriesling), Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc, which thrive in the region’s terroir, producing wines with vibrant acidity and excellent aging potential. The area also produces elegant Pinot Noir.

A Rich Cultural and Historical Heritage

Beyond its vineyards, the Pálava region boasts a wealth of cultural attractions. In Mikulov, delegates can explore the picturesque castle (the IWINETC venue) and the historic Jewish quarter, both must-visit sites for history enthusiasts. The castle also houses an impressive wine exhibition, showcasing the region’s long winemaking tradition.

Just outside Mikulov, the archaeological site of Dolní Věstonice is world-famous for the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, a prehistoric figurine dating back over 25,000 years. Meanwhile, the ruins of Děvičky Castle, perched atop a hill, offer breathtaking panoramic views of the vineyards and countryside.

IWINETC delegates will have the opportunity to experience the Pálava Hills wine region first-hand, with visits to historic wine cellars, such as the renowned Volařík Winery, which offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Gastronomy and Wine Pairings

A visit to the Pálava Hills wouldn’t be complete without indulging in South Moravian gastronomy. Local specialties include Svíčková (marinated beef with creamy sauce) and Moravský vrabec (which translates to “Moravian sparrows” but is actually roasted pork served with dumplings and braised cabbage—no sparrows involved! 😄). Traditional Moravian cheeses pair beautifully with the region’s aromatic white wines. For a sweet treat, try Trdelník, a popular pastry, best enjoyed with a glass of Pálava wine.
